…Governor Sanford would not win the next election. Word has come down the pike that despite the local school board canceling the Memorial Day weather makeup day, the governor has vetoed legislation that allows school boards to make the final determination on makeup days.

And so we’re back to Memorial Day possibly, maybe, supposedly, being a school day after all. Or maybe not.

“We’re going to override that veto,”state Rep. Carl Gullick (R-Lake Wylie) said of Sanford’s April 8 veto. “We can’t cut school money and on top of that not give them any flexibility in the local decisions, including scheduling.”

Governor Sanford has already been in hot water for not taking $700M in stimulus funds to put towards schools, which are in dire need of the cash. Now he wants the schools to stay open two extra days to the tune of many, MANY thousands of dollars. Maybe he just needs a really good accountant? Or maybe he knows what he’s doing?

At a rally in Rock Hill yesterday, citizens and school officials alike protested Gov. Sanford’s continued refusal to take $700M offered to SC from the stimulus package. Sanford wants to use the money to pay down state debt and avoid having future generations of South Carolinians pay for our current day spendiness.

Those who showed up for the protest feel that $700M would be well-served to make up for the shortages in the state education budget, giving schools the chance to continue their attempt to become better able to teach and equip children through needed programs that are in danger of being cut.

Sanford’s deadline for a final decision to approve the state’s legislative budget (which is being formed as though the state would NOT receive stimulus money) is this Friday. He alone will make the final decision whether to approve the budget or not, and whether S.C. will be using the stimulus money or not.

What is your opinion? Do you think Sanford should accept the stimulus money and put it to use where it is needed such as education and public safety, or should he continue to refuse it in order to avoid adding more debt to the state?
