A-Tisket, A-Tasket, You Cannot Sell Your Casket

casket, at gravesiteSo apparently a vendor was booted from the Trader Marc flea market in Fort Mill this past weekend for attempting to sell caskets. Merritt Eggleston, who builds the wooden caskets at a fraction of the cost of the ones you find in funeral homes, was given a 200% refund on his booth fees and asked to leave after some flea market customers complained about his product.

Eggleston told WCNC that he had a few interested parties come into his booth before he was asked to leave. I think it’s a shame that a few complainers ruined it for anyone else who might not otherwise know about Eggleston’s more cost-effective alternatives.

It boggles the mind that he was asked to leave. This means ANYone could be asked to leave for any reason. Don’t like cheap, plastic jewelry that breaks 15 minutes after you pull out of the parking lot? Maybe if you complain you can get the seller booted from the flea market too. Where does it stop? Allergic to peanuts? Complain about the guy selling organic peanut brittle even if it’s packed up in a box and covered in cellophane. Scared of squash? Turn in that veggie vendor!

Seriously though, I think Eggleston should be allowed back in. In this economy, we’re all trying to make our way and support our families and keep our roofs over our head. He has a legitimate business and a few folks who don’t like thinking about the fact that they are mortal should not hinder his ability to earn a living.

Would you be offended or shocked if you came upon a casket vendor at a flea market? Do you think Trader Marc’s should let Eggleston back in to the market? Sound off in the comments!

  1. Oooh good! Maybe we can get the trashy lingerie boothes kicked out as well!

Seriously though, I guess their are two sides. First it is a privately operated buisness so Trader Marc can decided to let in whoever he wants. But at the same time we need to learn that we as consumers don’t always get to have it our way. And while death isn’t pretty it is inevitable.

Put Eggleston next to the guy selling knives, swords and guns and maybe it will be good for buisness.

  2. Well stated Lucy! I couldn’t have said it better myself!

(And good tag line on this one Jane!) :-)

  3. Once again, the minority is determining what the majority may or may not want to see or purchase from a vendor. My take is, IF a few people do not want to see caskets at the flea market, then DON’T visit the market. But please leave it up to the rest of us to decide whether or not we wish to view and purchase this product. I think the owner’s of the market have little back-bone, as do many folks in our sociey today, when they allow a few to ruin it for the many. Where is the ACLU when we need them! :)

Everyone reading this and believes as I do, should email the owner’s of the flea market expressing our desire to allow this casket vendor back in!

  4. I have visited Trader Marcs 3 or 4 times from the beginning and there are better vendors setting up there each time I visit. While I would not mine a casket vendor
it does not bother me one wit if they choose not to let him in.
This market sure beats the one in Pineville, especially when it gets colder.

  5. Jam, that’s great news about more vendors signing up. Maybe I’ll go check it out this weekend now that it has been open for a couple months.
