My Foray Into Fort Mill’s DMV

This morning I finally got around to visiting the new Fort Mill DMV over in Regent Park. Let me state for the record: THAT PLACE ROCKS!!!
I’ve lived in places where I had to put up with a 2+ hour wait to get something stamped (picture on the left is what I’m used to although in Virginia and New Jersey they only have a handful of chairs, which requires you stand to wait your turn, not sit). The worst is waiting in line 2+ hours only to find out you filled out the form incorrectly and have to “move to the side” to do it the right way. When my family moved here in 2006 we visited the Rock Hill location and I was gratified that I only had to wait an hour or so to get my SC driver’s license.
So imagine my surprise this morning when I walked into the shiny, bright, new DMV in Fort Mill. I was greeted warmly at the door by a woman who asked what I needed and dispensed helpful advice and options. At that point she gave me my number and told me which window to go to. What was miraculous? The place only had three customers in it. So I literally just walked up to the counter, and less than a minute later I was done.
Total time in DMV: 2 minutes.
If you’ve been making the drive to Rock Hill just because you are used to it? Forget it – go to the DMV in Fort Mill. You won’t regret it. They did tell me that they are busiest on Fridays and when school is in session. That says to me that a Tuesday morning was pretty much the BEST time I could have picked to go to the DMV.

We were at the FM location DMV several weeks ago to pick up a DMV booklet (for our soon to be future driver – YIKES!) and there was only one other person inside. After reading your entry today it reminded me that I (thought) I had read somewhere that the Rock Hill DMV was now closed? So I went onto the DMV site to see if this was true:

Fort Mill Office Location Open
The York County Complex office located at 1070 Heckle Boulevard in Rock Hill has moved to a new location. The new office is located at 3071 Hwy 21 in Fort Mill. The new office telephone number is 803-547-8350. In addition to regular office serivces, this office now offers driver skills testing.

So my question is – if the only DMV location in all of York County is in FM – where the heck is everyone? (not complaining of course – just wondering)
I can see where you might be confused. However, there were TWO locations in Rock Hill – the one on Heckle that relocated to Fort Mill, and one on Hands Mill Road. So, it is now the Hands Mill Road location which is being overrun – I’ve heard the lines there are long now, because no one in RH comes to FM’s new location!
I had no idea that there was another DMV off of Hands Mill. Thanks for clearing that up for me Jane.
