If Kids Could Vote…
By Jane | April 14th, 2009 | Category: Local Politics | 1 Comment »…Governor Sanford would not win the next election. Word has come down the pike that despite the local school board canceling the Memorial Day weather makeup day, the governor has vetoed legislation that allows school boards to make the final determination on makeup days.
And so we’re back to Memorial Day possibly, maybe, supposedly, being a school day after all. Or maybe not.
“We’re going to override that veto,”state Rep. Carl Gullick (R-Lake Wylie) said of Sanford’s April 8 veto. “We can’t cut school money and on top of that not give them any flexibility in the local decisions, including scheduling.”
Governor Sanford has already been in hot water for not taking $700M in stimulus funds to put towards schools, which are in dire need of the cash. Now he wants the schools to stay open two extra days to the tune of many, MANY thousands of dollars. Maybe he just needs a really good accountant? Or maybe he knows what he’s doing?

It is all about grandstanding and politicking! The schools despartely need the money in order to preserve teacher jobs, small classrooms, and quality education. The governor is putting politics above the best interests of the community and our students. But should we be surprised when it is polictics as usual—from either party!
