About Our Area

Almost 40,000 people live in the Township as of 2009, with more moving here every day. It never fails that new residents get confused about Fort Mill and Fort Mill Township. “Aren’t they the same thing?” they ask. No! In fact, Fort Mill is merely a town within Fort Mill Township. Confused? Not to worry – we’re here to help!

The township covers a wider area of land, from the northern state line down to Rock Hill, from Sugar Creek in the east to the Catawba River in the west. Fort Mill Township is one of the fastest growing areas in York County.

Fort Mill

Fort Mill is an area within the township, centered primarily east of I-77. See the map below – the white portion shows the general outline of Fort Mill within the larger township.

Indian Land

Ready for more confusion? Fort Mill Township isn’t only in York County. It also stretches into neighboring Lancaster County to the east. That area of Fort Mill falls into the panhandle section of the county, and has its own school system, its own government structure and town amenities. And yet it is still considered a part of Fort Mill Township! Folks living in Indian Land use the Fort Mill post office and zip code, and have been negotiating for years to obtain it’s own post office so that mail can be directed to “Indian Land” as opposed to “Fort Mill,” to help ease the confusion. That plan has been unsuccessful thus far. However, in 2007 they did finally receive their own zip code (29707). Indian Land is currently unincorporated.

Tega Cay

Tega Cay began as a planned resort community in the 1970s. However, as it continued to grow, residents opted to incorporate the area and turn from a gated community into an official city. Appropriately, they chose July 4, 1982 as their “independence day.” The map below shows Tega Cay’s boundaries on the peninsula. Fort Mill proper is due east.
